What Is Trauma and How Does It Happen?
Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that can impact every part of our lives—our emotions, thoughts, relationships, and even our physical well-being. It’s not just something we go through; it’s something that leaves a lasting imprint, shaping how we see ourselves and the world around us. At Talk With Christel, my mission is to help women understand and overcome trauma so they can move forward with strength, clarity, and self-love.
What Is Trauma?
At its core, trauma is the emotional and psychological response to a deeply painful or threatening event. These events often overwhelm our ability to cope, leaving us feeling helpless, afraid, or stuck. Trauma can arise from many experiences, including:
Abuse (physical, emotional, verbal, or sexual).
Neglect during childhood or in relationships.
Loss of a loved one, job, or important life aspect.
Accidents or Natural Disasters that shake our sense of safety.
Toxic Relationships or prolonged exposure to manipulative behavior.
While the causes of trauma vary, what’s important is how these experiences affect us. For one person, a situation may feel manageable, but for another, it can be deeply traumatizing. Trauma is personal, and there’s no “right” way to experience or respond to it.
How Does Trauma Happen?
Trauma occurs when an event overwhelms your emotional or physical capacity to cope. It disrupts your sense of security and leaves you feeling unsafe, powerless, or disconnected. Here’s how trauma typically develops:
The Event: Something distressing or harmful happens—this could be a single event like a car accident or an ongoing situation like living with emotional abuse.
The Impact: Your brain processes the event as a threat and activates a fight, flight, or freeze response. This is your body’s way of protecting you, but when the danger passes, the response doesn’t always “turn off.”
The Residual Effect: If unprocessed, the trauma stays with you. It can manifest as anxiety, depression, flashbacks, trust issues, or even physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue.
